Mullaitivu Students Educational Development Program
Introduction:
Mullaitivu is one of the worst war affected districts in Sri Lanka. The majority of people of Mullaitivu are engaged in farming or fishing for the living. The education of Mullaitivu have many shortcomings including poor infrastructure, inadequate qualified teachers, poor transport system etc. This situation of teaching A/L Mathematics and Biology streams is at its worse and the number of schools are also less in number compared to the big land area.
The private tuition for A/L Mathematics and Biology are also not much developed in Mullaitivu. People who have a stable financial income send their children for tuition in Jaffna. COVID and the economic crisis made this condition from bad to worse. Many students select Arts or Commerce stream though their first preference is Mathematics or Biology. This created a pathetic situation in which no much candidates in Mullaitivu are available not only to many courses in Government Universities but also courses in Government Health Schools like Nursing, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, MLT, Midwifery etc. On the other hand many Arts and Commerce graduates are waiting for many years due to unemployment.
One way bus fair from Mullaitivu to Jaffna is Rs. 500 and students spend lot of money in transport. Accommodation, meals, tuition fees, education materials also very high compared to pre COVID era.
The Mullaitivu Education Zone contains of three Divisional Secretary areas namely Maritimepatru, Puthukkudieruppu and Welioya. There are no Tamil Medium Schools in Welioya division. There are seven (1AB) schools with A/L Mathematics and Biology streams in Mullaitivu Education Zone. There are 1400 – 1500 students sitting for the O/L exam in Mullaitivu Education Zone every year and only 200 – 250 are selecting Mathematics and Biology in A/L.
In this situation some educated people of Mullaitivu formed an educational trust to support the A/L Mathematics and Biology streams in Mullaitivu Educational Zone. The name of the Trust is “Ariviyal Amuthu”.
Vision:
“Achiving 100% pass in A/L examinations in Mathematics and Biology streams in Mullaitivu Education Zone”
Mission:
